About HovdePress and ResourcesHeart of Hovde

Dedicated on January 25, 2006, the Hovde House (“Casa Hovde”) is a home for street children in Mexico City, a location severely affected by child homelessness.  Funded by the Hovde Foundation, Casa Hovde provides a comprehensive range of care to sixty-two children who were previously living on the city’s streets as a result of difficult circumstances at home including poverty, domestic abuse, and substance abuse.  In many cases, these children have been abandoned by parents who are unable to care for them.

The Hovde House is structured as a rehabilitative family home with the ultimate goal of enabling the children to reintegrate into a healthy and productive living environment.  Every aspect of the Hovde House is designed to assist in the rebuilding of the children’s physical and emotional health and to contribute to the development of the skills necessary for their future independence.

The Hovde Foundation is deeply committed to the Hovde House initiative and plans to build twenty of these homes over the next twenty years in locations affected by child homelessness around the world.

An Interview: Lucia's Story

Lucia*, a 15-year-old girl from Mexico City, is a current resident of Casa Hovde.  During a recent visit, she shared her story with us:

One of 18 children, Lucia’s parents were unable to effectively support her and her brothers and sisters.  Her father is an abusive alcoholic who spent little time at home with the family.  When he was home, he frequently blamed his children for his condition, saying, “It is your fault that we are living like we are.”  According to Lucia, this was often followed by a beating.  Because their home was not nearly big enough for such a large family, many of the children, including Lucia, were forced out onto the street.

Lucia and her seven-year-old brother, Carlos*, have lived at Casa Hovde for several months now.  She plans to finish school and is eager to go to the university where she hopes to study graphic design.
